Look, I get it, nostalgia is a powerful drug. And Futurama was a fantastic show with excellent characters, great jokes, and (not even particularly) deep in it’s core, a lot of heart and relatability. Seems to be every other commenter will have their own personal spin on just how much harder “Jurassic Bark” (the one with Fry’s dog), or “Luck of the Fryish” (with the 7 leaf clover) hit them specifically rather than everyone else similarly moved to literal tears by the emotional beats presented. Or like, how many people can rattle off entire jokes or scenes from the classic episodes?
But there’s the problem, as it’s always the problem – the classic episodes. The “good old days”.
So this is something I’ve been saying about… well pretty much everything for years, and the vast majority will start (almost literal) fist fights with me over, despite the mountains and mountains of evidence in favour.
Modern media, like most things, has been poisoned by the capitalist death cult.
Every single(*) piece of beloved media from the past inevitably gets dredged up, squeezed of all remaining value, and resold back to you. And capitalism doesn’t care – there’s a single penny to be made from it, and you dumb shits will lap it up time and time again. Despite every single time, it comes back as a hollow, shambling corpse of what once made it great. But y’all don’t care.
Consider… not even the newest iteration of Futurama, but the one *before* this one. The previous re-re-re-revival. It was tedious, bland, forgettable… and the fans somehow refused to see the declining quality. Well… the majority of fans did anyway. Some of us were actually wise enough to step back from our previous reverence for the series and evaluate it with as fresh a set of eyes as was possible.
And it ended. And the smart, discerning viewer breathed a sigh of relief. It was over… they botched the ending a little, but it could still be fondly remembered as the cultural force it was. It was time to rest…
But of course – enter capitalism. Never content with “excellent” or even “transcendent”. If there isn’t unlimited, hyperbolic growth, what’s even the point? And so the corpse was exhumed. And the cycle begins again.
For what it’s worth, I don’t expect this to go anywhere… but this is my place, and if I’m not allowed to bitch and moan impotently here, then where? And FFS, LISTEN to me next time I tell y’all that the obvious course of action is going to happen. I’ve been right a significant majority of the time.
